Grey Rocks

Grey Rocks

This rock-face is visible to most, from Moores Creek, who walk along the Zamia Track. I had been past it once before during an attempted long walk to Mt Nicholson.

We met at the National Park sign on Sunset Drive before heading up Moores Creek. We climbed the waterfall at First Turkey and continued upstream beside the creek. We continued to follow the creek upstream to a saddle before following the ridge up to the Grey Rocks.

Here we rested and had lunch. Usually, at the bottom of cliff faces, there is little vegetation due to lack of sunlight and animal tracks. I wanted to use this theory to follow the main creek back to Moores Creek, but this theory did not apply and it was not long before we were making slow progress pushing through lantana. Once below the lantana, travel speed picked up and we followed this larger tributary pass pools with fish, native frogs and tadpoles back to Moores Creek. Despite damaging winds from cyclone Marcia, (20 February), this area of the Berserkers only showed minor damage.

A month or so later I again did the walk with Alan, but instead of trying to drop below the cliff-face, we followed the ridge along to the next spur before dropping back into the creek. This proved to be a far better way of walking down.
